Green Power
Green Power is an environmentally friendly electricity product, generated from renewable energy sources like solar, wind and even decomposing garbage in selected landfills.
We all share a vested interest in protecting the environment - that's why Palmetto Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper offer Green Power. In 2001, Santee Cooper became the first utility to generate Green Power and offer it for sale in South Carolina. Not only did Palmetto Electric Cooperative sign up as one of the first cooperatives in the state to offer Green Power, but we continue to be a leader in Green Power commercial sales, with tremendous residential support too. One of the most popular events in our area, the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, is powered by 100% renewable sources. We are proud to have partnered with the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing and Santee Cooper to make the tournament a certified Green Power event for the past 15 years.
What is Green Power?
Generated by Santee Cooper and distributed by Palmetto Electric Cooperative, South Carolina's Green Power program has grown from one landfill site generating 2.2 megawatts to 6 landfills in Horry, Lee, Richland, Anderson, Georgetown and Berkeley counties generating 28 MWs (megawatts) of renewable energy. At these sites, the methane gases that would normally be released into the atmosphere are used as "green power" fuel.
